Huge water savings to be made by Alice Springs accommodation providers – 5 April 2013

Hotels, motels and other accommodation providers in Alice Springs could save up to save $330,000 from going down the drain every year.

They have been able to identify around 176 million litres in annual water savings through the Alice Water Smart Project, in partnership with Tourism NT.

Alice Water Smart Project Manager, Les Seddon, said ‘This project has yielded fantastic results. It has literally saved money going the drain. Imagine how much water it would take to fill 72 Alice Aquatic Centre pools – that’s how much can be saved.

‘These results show a very strong business case for investing in water saving initiatives within the accommodation sector. Most of these water saving opportunities are relatively simple but, when combined, make a big difference.’

Twenty accredited accommodation providers, representing the majority of hotels, motels, backpackers, serviced apartments and caravan parks in Alice Springs, participated in the project.

’This project has shown that ten businesses can potentially cut their water consumption in half and seven by a third. This will cut thousands of dollars off their annual bottom line,’ Mr Seddon said.

The remaining three participants had little opportunity to reduce their water consumption because they were already managing their water use effectively.

‘Tourism plays a vital role in Alice Springs and the industry uses a significant amount of water in the town, particularly the accommodation sector.

‘Assisting the tourism industry to adopt more water efficient behaviours and practices makes good business sense.  Reducing consumption through achievable measures helps conserve a precious resource, helps businesses reduce costs, and helps meet a growing consumer demand for greener travel options.’

The maintenance manager of Crowne Plaza Alice Springs, Brett Rumbal, said ''We welcomed the opportunity to participate in the Alice Water Smart project. Whilst the hotel had already implemented a number of water saving initiatives we knew that it was likely there were further opportunities to reduce the water consumption across our property.”

Environmental consultants, BMT WBM Pty Ltd, conducted extensive Water Efficiency Consultations with each property, which looked at water fixtures, fittings and infrastructure and the way in which people used water in each operation.

They developed water management reports tailored for each participating property. These provided participants with a summary of current water use and identified opportunities to reduce consumption, together with estimates of costs and ongoing savings associated with implementing the recommendations outlined in the reports.

“The water management report was very comprehensive and certainly did identify some further saving opportunities which we are now in the process of implementing.  The saving actions and recommendations were presented to us in a very concise and logical format that made it easy to understand and easy to present to our owners as well as vendors,” said Mr Rumbal.

“When you add it all up as the water management report did, the water savings and the short payback periods to achieve them made a very compelling case to invest.”

Alice Water Smart Accommodation is part of an overall water efficiency plan for Alice Springs, Alice Water Smart, which aims to reduce annual water consumption in the town by 1600 million litres over two years.

Alice Water Smart is a $15 million project jointly funded through the Australian Government’s Water for the Future initiative.
